"Christ acts through the sacraments he instituted to communicate his grace. The sacraments are perceptible signs accessible to our human nature. By the action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit they make present efficaciously the grace that they signify."
--- Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1084
The Church celebrates as each individual receives the sacraments. St. Mary's Parish offers our parishioners the opportunity to experience God's graces. Click a sacrament from the list on the right to learn more.

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
We believe that baptism saves us from the Original Sin of Adam and Eve. It is the Sacrament of Baptism that starts us on our journey of faith. While most receive this sacrament as infants, some are called to baptism later in life. For these situations, please see our site under Faith Formation for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
If you have a child who is ready to receive the Sacrament of Baptism, please review the baptism guidelines below and complete the Baptism form for each child.
The Sacrament of Confirmation empowers us to be messengers for Christ by giving us the Gifts of the Spirit. Those who are confirmed are set forth on a mission to live a life of faith and service to all as members of the Church throughout the world. One of the most commonly known aspects of this sacrament is the taking of a Confirmation Name, often one of a Saint whose life we are setting out to imitate. In the Diocese of Paterson, Confirmation typically takes place during the sophomore year of high school (around age 16). An extensive two year program is available to those preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation which involves catechesis, service, and more.
Pope Paul VI noted that the Eucharist is the "source and summit of the Christian life" (Lumen Gentium, 11). Each time we celebrate the Mass, we remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first time we receive the Body and Blood of Christ is a momentous occasion and requires a time of prayerful preparation. St. Mary's offers Faith Formation in the area of the Eucharist that will assist children and adults in preparing for the First Eucharist.
Sin is a natural part of our human lives; it gradual separates us from our relationship with God. The Sacrament of Penance allows us the opportunity to receive full forgiveness and mercy through the power of absolution. St. Mary's offers the Sacrament of Penance each week before the 5:30 PM Saturday mass and as requested by individuals. Special times are typically set up during Lent and Advent- keep tabs on our website for postings of those times. Faith Formation is also offered for students to help them prepare for their first experience of this sacrament. For more information or to request an individual confession time, please contact the Parish Office.
The Church is always calling some to the vocation of the priesthood or religious life. Serving as a priest for Jesus Christ is both a sacrifice and a joy. Much like the earliest followers of Jesus, part of the ordination rite includes the laying on of hands by the Bishop. This replicates the earliest commisioning we read about in the Acts of the Apostles. There are several other ministries that can be part of the vocational call. They include the diaconate- part of Holy Orders, religious life- men and women dedicated to a specific purpose, religious sisters, and many more. For more information on vocations to the priesthood or other forms of religious life, please contact Fr. Derek in the Parish Office or visit the Vocations Webpage for the Diocese of Paterson.
Through the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, the Church unites in prayer for the sick and suffering. The first Apostles were commisioned by Jesus to anoint and heal the sick as part of their ministry. Today, it can involve the forgiveness of sins and the reception of the Body of Christ in situations where passing to Eternal Life seems eminent. Interestingly enough, the Anointing of the Sick can be received multiple times if the situations arise. If you or a loved one feel it is necessary to receive the Anointing, please contact the Parish Office.
